Why did the overdrive light turn on?

my 1996 Doge pickup runs great but the other day it felt like it slipped and the overdrive light came on. I pulled over and shut the truck off and it hasnt came on since then. When I drive with my air on if I floor it the air stops until I stop accelarating. The truck works fine do you think it would need the transfer case to be changed out?
