Will going from Reverse to Drive w/o braking mess up a car?

My car is a 09 malibu automatic I completely brake between shifting gears. My husband will reverse then midway before completely stopping and w/o braking he'll put it in drive and sometimes the car will jerk or make a thud sound then drive off. I keep telling him it could mess up the car and he doesn't listen says since the car is new it won't hurt it. I need someone to put me at ease and let me know if he's right or some way to prove him wrong cuz I really need this car to last!
