WW2 some made straight 6's into 4's by disabling valves on 2 cylinders. Will V6 work? Which 2 cylinders best?

They did it to save gas during gas rationing. My dad said he did it to straight six Chevy. By removing push rods, the valves stayed closed on those two cylinders, they used no gas in those two cylinders and there was no air pumped in and out of those cylinders. On a V6 which 4 cylinders would give the smoothest running four? I have a 1992 Ford Explorer V6 and I wonder if it would get better fuel economy as a four cylinder.
