Should I at least try to give my diabetic cat shots?

I feel your pain! When Rudey was dx'ed over a year ago, I felt the same anxiety you do... believe me, it will get easier. Half the time I had to have my mother help me because I was so scared I was going to hurt him or do something.... They have no idea you are shooting them (especially when they are eating) and for me, it costs about $40 every two months for syringes and about $30 every 3 months for insulin.
